History Tour-“Fourknocks Passage Tomb & Ancient Neolithic Landscape”

History Tour-“Fourknocks Passage Tomb & Ancient Neolithic Landscape”

Step across the threshold of Fourknocks Passage tomb and journey back more than 5000 years into the world of Ireland’s earliest farmers.

Welcome to the Boyne Valley Trails September Festival 2026.

Beginning at the entrance to the passage tomb and continuing inside the ancient monument itself, Community Historian Brendan Matthews will guide you through one of Ireland’s finest Neolithic sites and the surrounding landscape of Tír Rí—the “Land of the King.”

Discover how Ireland’s first farming communities reached our shores over 5,000 years ago, settled this fertile landscape and created the magnificent passage tombs that still dominate the countryside today.

Along the way, explore some of Fourknocks’ greatest mysteries:

  • Who built the passage tomb—and why?
  • Where did these early settlers come from?
  • What do the tomb and its remarkable art reveal about Neolithic life, death and belief?
  • Why have their tombs survived while their homes have disappeared?
  • The fascinating discovery of the remains of more than 75 individuals.
  • Ritual, sacrifice, violence—or something else entirely?

Stand within one of Ireland’s most remarkable prehistoric monuments and experience the atmosphere of a place that has inspired wonder for over five thousand years.

History isn’t confined to the pages of a book—it lives within the landscape.

The stones of Fourknocks still have stories to tell. Come and discover them.

A relaxed, laid back history tour on some uneven ground but suitable for all.

Things To Know

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Here are some of the most common queries about our trails and events.

What should I bring with me?

For our forest, mountain or off-road trails, we recommend bringing water, snacks, good waterproof boots or trainers, hat and sunglasses. You may bring a walking pole if you like and please dress according to the weather-it is Ireland after all. Light layers and waterproof shoes and coat, plus some clean socks just in case.

Dogs are allowed on some of our trails and on others only guide dogs are permitted. Please read the event description carefully to see if dogs are allowed or contact us to confirm.

Yes! We include in the cost of the tickets the official Camino passport. You will collect stamps all along the Boyne Camino route and you can (if you are feeling extra adventurous) take this passport with you to complete the remaining 75km in Spain to complete a full 100km Camino.

We use Eventbrite as our ticketing partner; they process our ticket sales on our behalf. As we are a volunteer-led group, we need to add a small charge to each ticket to cover fees from Eventbrite.
