History Tour-“Stamullen, Monastic Site, Medieval Church & Graveyard”

Led by Community Historian Brendan Matthews, this history walking tour will step back over 1000 years into Early Christian Ireland.

Welcome to the Boyne Valley Trails September Festival 2026.

Step back over 1,000 years into the heart of Early Christian and medieval Ireland in the peaceful setting of Steach Maoilín (Stamullen).

Join Community Historian Brendan Matthews for a fascinating guided walk through one of County Meath’s hidden historic treasures. Explore the atmospheric ruins of St Patrick’s Medieval Parish Church and the adjoining 15th-century St Christopher’s Chapel, home to magnificent medieval monuments and a remarkable collection of rare carved tombstones.

Discover the stories of the Preston family, Viscounts Gormanston, along with the lives of the lords and ladies, soldiers, schoolteachers, poets, landlords, tenants and even highwaymen whose lives are remembered within this ancient burial ground. Every monument has a story to tell, revealing over a thousand years of local history.

Delivered in Brendan’s relaxed and engaging style, this one-hour Walk & Talk offers an enjoyable afternoon of history, heritage and storytelling suitable for all ages.

Things To Know

Got questions? We’ve got answers. Here are some of the most common queries about our trails and events.

What should I bring with me?

For our forest, mountain or off-road trails, we recommend bringing water, snacks, good waterproof boots or trainers, hat and sunglasses. You may bring a walking pole if you like and please dress according to the weather-it is Ireland after all. Light layers and waterproof shoes and coat, plus some clean socks just in case.

Dogs are allowed on some of our trails and on others only guide dogs are permitted. Please read the event description carefully to see if dogs are allowed or contact us to confirm.

Yes! We include in the cost of the tickets the official Camino passport. You will collect stamps all along the Boyne Camino route and you can (if you are feeling extra adventurous) take this passport with you to complete the remaining 75km in Spain to complete a full 100km Camino.

We use Eventbrite as our ticketing partner; they process our ticket sales on our behalf. As we are a volunteer-led group, we need to add a small charge to each ticket to cover fees from Eventbrite.
