History & Heritage Walk N Talk-Ballad Song Maker and Radical Weaver John Sheil 1784-1872
The popular annual Walk N Talk in association with the great Sean Nos Ballad Singers of Drogheda returns with @Community Historian Brendan Matthews presenting on John Sheil’s Life, Times and Demise.
Beginning and ending in the Drogheda Potato market at Bolton Square on Wednesday evening next July 17th beginning at 7.30pm. John Sheil wrote in excess of 400 ballad songs in his life time. These songs were then sung at markets and fairs and sold by pedlars; songs such as the “Wedding at Baltray”, “Bellewstown Hill”, “Lovely James of Julianstown”, “Beautiful Balbriggan Maid”, “Garristown Jack” and the “Maid of Mornington” to name but a few. Sheil also wrote many songs of a seditious nature which often got the singers and pedlars into trouble.
Free event and all are welcome to attend.
