Amergin and the Milesians: The Importance of Drogheda and the Boyne
Tickets via Eventbrite-click here.
Welcome to the Boyne Valley Trails September Festival.
Anthony Murphy of “Mythical Ireland” will give a talk about Amergin Glúngeal, the bard of the Milesians, who in mythology were said to have successfully taken control of Ireland from the deities of the Tuatha Dé Danann in prehistory.
This talk will examine more closely the figure of Amergin, and why he – as the poet of the Milesians – was more important and central to their success in winning Ireland from the Tuatha Dé Danann.
Probably the most important events in the myth of the Milesians took place in the Boyne Valley, and Drogheda has a very strong connection as the supposed resting place of the Milesian bard.
Come along and hear history, myth and archaeology combine for a fascinating ancient story of intrigue. Learn about the Amergin mural on North Strand (one of the DRAWDA Urban Art Trail mythological murals) and hear insights into its key features.
